This video is graphic, but it’s a reminder of why whaling needs to be stopped.

We shed a tear at Whale Watch this morning when we learned that a baby humpback whale that had been stranded off the coast of Sydney, Australia, is to be euthanized.

The helpless calf, who became separated from it’s mother, was discovered over the weekend desperately trying to suckle a yacht. For days the poor thing has been in distress, and it’s condition is deteriorating, but attempts to lure it back to deeper waters have been futile. Experts are saying it would be too costly to raise the calf in captivity, so it must be euthanized to end it’s suffering.

Our hearts are breaking at the thought of this innocent creature starving to death or being attacked by a shark if it were alone in the ocean, but we have just as icky a feeling about killing it “painlessly” to spare it from such a fate.

A sad day indeed.
