Sperm Whale Pod Spotted off the Coast of Southern California

Rare southern California sighting

California whale-watchers were treated to an extremely rare sight, the week of March 10: A rare pod of sperm whales was sighted off San Pedro. The pod contained 14 or 15 animals, according to reports. Probably the pod is composed of females and young males.

Single sightings of the endangered sperm whale aren't uncommon off the coast of California. There haven't been any reported sightings of a pod in the last three decades, however, so this really is a momentous event.
