As a homeschooling parent, I try to get the best book deals I possibly can. There are a lot of ways to do this! Here are just a few.

For all the threats of nuclear war of the decades since the end of WW II in 1945, the only time that nuclear weapons have been used in a conflict was the two that were dropped on Japan to end their participation in World War II. We know that there have been generals and even presidents who talked about the possible use of such weapons since WW II.

There are many bodies of water in the world that are polluted with radioactive materials. Ground water may penetrate underground repositories and spread radioactive materials far beyond the storage facility. There are ways to deal with radioactive materials dissolved in water but there is no widespread cheap technique.

Remember when we used to make fun of that one person who always shared photos of their food on Facebook? Right. Today so many people fashion themselves food critics on Yelp or share their photos on Instagram that now a restaurant's popularity may hang in the balance of whether or not its food makes for a presentable Instagram photo. Foodies, is this what we've come to? Goodbye, Food Network: Hello, food networking.
Did you know that talking to a loved one can actually activate the part of your brain that lights up when you hug that person? Studies have also shown that when a person gets a live phone call or audio message from a loved one it induces more feelings of security and calm than a text message does. In short, hearing voices is good for us, which is a bit sad when you realize how little we hear voices today.
We recently discussed how just about any game can be made into a Halloween game with the right spin, props and some creativity. Cosmopolitan has released a list of 15 fun Halloween games to try at your next party and some of them look like a lot of fun.
Poet laureat Tracy K. Smith has a new podcast out called The Slowdown, which is due in November. The podcast is meant to be a very brief reading of poetry-only a few minutes long each day!-- intended to help us not only enjoy a poetry reading but to slow down, take a breath and just be still in the mad constant busy-ness which is life.
When I was a kid, I always read the book I was reading until the end. It didn't matter if I didn't love it or not, and I must say that as a kid I liked more books than I like as an adult anyway, but that's beside the point. Another mom and I were discussing when we draw the line at where to quit reading a book we're not into the other day and while we agreed that three chapters is usually good for a longer book, a shorter book might need more pages. She conceded that 50 might be enough, but I said sometimes that if I hate a book enough in the first chapter, I'll close it for good.
Many people have annual traditions that they follow, whether they write them down or not, and Halloween presents a special time of year for many of these annual rituals. From pumpkin carving to fall foliage drives, costumes to theme parties, there's never a shortage of autumn traditions. One thing that many people in Seattle love to do every Halloween is hit the Wild Waves Theme and Water Park for the annual Fright Fest weekends.
Allan Piper at Now This Politics has a great video up describing why we must believe women who say they've been sexually assaulted. In it, Piper points out that this isn't because women are more honest or trustworthy than men, but because the odds are that women WILL be assaulted sometime in their lifetime. Knowing that at least a quarter of women will be assaulted should make men more apt to believe a woman when she comes forward.
There's a huge assumption made regarding youth and alcohol: mainly that most teens drink, at least at some point in their secondary education or college careers, and that it's just a fact of life. But personal experience has led me to believe otherwise, and now data seems to be catching up: in England, for example, stats show that nearly 30% of young people don't drink at all.
Most drinking games involve some type of board game, a movie or TV show or another physical game in which you drink every time X happens (Trump says "great," someone lands on a green square, your dog farts, what have you). But how often do you turn video games into drinking games at your house? The folks over at iMore have turned Super Mario Party into a drinking game with some really easy rules to follow, so be sure to check it out!
When it comes to the 1980s, many of us think of music and fashion as the period's prime calling cards, but there were so many 80s heartthrobs, singers and actors who stole our hearts as well. The 1980s saw just as much, if not more, fandoms rise as the previous three decades of changing music and the film industry, and even those of us who weren't old enough to remember probably have our own 80s favorites.
It's fall, y'all! Okay, as annoying as that sounds, autumn does mean that it's time to get our gardens all cleared out and ready for the next season. One of the biggest things to do this time of year is to clear, clear, clear, which means to weed again. You think you're all done after the heat of summer, but once those weeds begin to seed again that's double (or more!) weeds for you next season! Make sure to really clear out those weeds to help start a fresh garden next time around.
